Why visit Roatán, Bay Islands, Honduras?
Roatán sits off the northern coast of Honduras on the world's second-largest barrier reef system, and it delivers a rare combination: serious diving, genuinely good beaches, and prices that don't punish you for wanting both. You can dive a shipwreck in the morning, snorkel straight off the sand after lunch, and watch the sun go down over the Caribbean with a plate of fresh fish in front of you. It isn't polished in the way some Caribbean islands are — that's the point. Roatán hasn't been over-built, and the island culture is still very much intact.
Who is Roatán best for?
Divers and snorkelers first — this is the reason most people come, and it's reason enough. But it's also a genuinely good fit for couples wanting a romantic, unhurried island week, families with kids who'll happily hold a sloth or snorkel from the beach, and small groups who want adventure by day and a relaxed table by night. It's less suited to travelers who want nightlife, big resort infrastructure, or a highly curated luxury experience — Roatán's appeal is authenticity, not polish.
Where should I stay in Roatán?
We're not pointing you to a single property here, because we don't have one to stand behind yet on this island. What we'd tell you instead: West Bay is the easiest base if you want beach and reef access without a car, with calm water and shore snorkeling right out front. West End is a short walk or water-taxi from West Bay and has a more local, low-key feel with good dive shops and restaurants within walking distance. If you're diving heavily, look at properties built around a dive operation rather than a beach resort — the logistics matter more than the thread count. Wherever you land, keep it on the west side of the island; the drive times elsewhere aren't worth it for a short trip.

What's the signature experience in Roatán?
Diving — and not just diving, but the range of it packed into one small island. Within a short boat ride you'll find coral walls, swim-through canyons, wrecks, shark encounters, and drift dives, alongside sites gentle enough for someone diving for the first time. Even if you've never been certified, the snorkeling here holds its own against anywhere in the Caribbean, and much of it starts at the shoreline — no boat required.
Expect vibrant reef, large schools of tropical fish, night dives, wall dives, and water warm enough that a light wetsuit is really just for comfort, not necessity.
What are the best dive and snorkel sites in Roatán?
- Mary's Place — the island's signature dive, with dramatic crevices and swim-throughs cut into the reef wall
- West Bay Beach — excellent snorkeling steps from the sand, ideal for non-divers
- El Aguila Wreck — a well-established wreck now thick with marine life
- Odyssey Wreck — one of the largest intentionally sunk wrecks in the Caribbean
- Blue Channel — a forgiving, satisfying dive for all experience levels
- Cara a Cara — the island's shark dive, and not one you'll forget
Where should I eat in Roatán?
Seafood is the constant, and it's genuinely fresh — ask what came in that morning. Worth seeking out: Luna Muna, Sea Salt, Roatán Oasis, Blue Roatán Bistro, the restaurant at Anthony's Key Resort, Sandy Buns Bakery & Café, Café Escondido, and the Beach Club at West Bay. None of these need a reservation weeks out, but the better ones fill up at sunset — go early if you want the view with your table.
Is Roatán family friendly?
Yes, and it's an easy one for mixed generations. Kids tend to love the sloth and monkey sanctuaries, chocolate-making is hands-on enough to hold their attention, and shore snorkeling means you don't need everyone certified to dive together. Glass-bottom boat tours are a good option for anyone not ready to get in the water, and the zip line canopy tours give older kids something with a bit of adrenaline. Beach days need no planning at all, which is its own kind of family-friendly.
When is the best time to visit Roatán?
- Peak season: February–April — the most reliable weather and diving conditions, and the busiest, priciest window.
- Shoulder season: May–August — fewer crowds, still excellent diving, and generally better value.
- Green season: October–January — rainfall picks up, especially October and November; it's the tradeoff-heavy stretch, though far from a washout.
By activity: diving, snorkeling, and beach days are all strongest February through August. Best value runs May through September. If you want a relaxed Caribbean week without chasing perfect conditions, this island works year-round.
What's the insider's secret to Roatán?
Go in September. It's the month most people skip, and it shouldn't be. The peak-season crowds are gone, the water is at its warmest, diving conditions are often excellent, and pricing across the island tends to soften noticeably. October and November bring the real rain, but September frequently threads the needle — good weather, thin crowds, and an island that feels unhurried in a way it doesn't in March.
Sample 5-night itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive, check in, do nothing but the beach.
- Day 2: Two-tank dive or a full snorkel excursion.
- Day 3: Sloth sanctuary in the morning, explore a village in the afternoon.
- Day 4: Dive Mary's Place or the Odyssey Wreck.
- Day 5: West Bay Beach by day, sunset sail in the evening.
- Day 6 (departure): One last shore snorkel before you fly.
What should I know before I go?
Leave your last full day light on plans, especially if you've been diving — flight rules mean you need at least 18-24 hours surface time before flying, and it's an easy thing to forget when you're planning a final dive on your last morning. Build that buffer in before you book flights, not after.
What We'd Prioritise
We wouldn't overbuild this trip. Roatán rewards a loose plan — two or three dives, one wildlife morning, and long stretches of nothing scheduled at all. It's not a place that needs to be maximized. Paul knows this island from years back and is looking forward to seeing what's changed; Diana is coming in fresh, and the plan is simple — let the reef and the beach do the talking, the way they always have here.

Is this a timeshare?
No. There’s no ownership interest, deed, points system, or long-term obligation · it’s a private membership for access to resort stays, and you can cancel anytime.
Is airfare included?
No. Members arrange and pay for their own flights and ground transportation.
Are you open to partnering with hotels, resorts, and other properties?
Yes — we’re always looking for distinguished, place-defining properties that meet our standard. If you represent a resort, boutique hotel, private residence, or unique experience, tell us about your property and we’ll be in touch.
Are resort fees included?
Your resort accommodation is covered. Any mandatory resort fees, meals, and local taxes are disclosed before you confirm a stay.
How long can I stay?
Request 3–7 nights. A full membership year covers up to a five-night stay for two; additional nights may be available based on inventory.
Can I bring more people?
Yes · add adults or children to your membership at signup or later. Your total party is limited by the accommodation’s capacity.
What if my preferred dates aren’t available?
Stays are subject to availability. We’ll suggest alternate dates or destinations to find something that works.
When can I book my stay?
Your dues prepay your stay night by night: a 3-night stay once you’ve paid about two-thirds of the year, four nights a little later, and the full five at a year (or prepay the year up front to book right away). Booking uses your one guaranteed stay for the year; additional stays may be available subject to availability.
